Misfits photo shoot - 1979

By June 1980 Ray was supervising final cuts of the Kinks Time- Life video, which was going to be released consecutively with One for the Road, the live album. I went to New York to finalize details on the release of my own album. It was mastered at Masterdisk. Bob Ludwig, the head cutting engineer, had previously worked on various Kink albums and I was eager to work with him on my own tapes. Bob was a great guy, always listening, always trying to think of ways to enhance and improve the cut. He exuded a quiet confidence and had good judgement. I always thought of him as a kind of an 'engineer yogi'.

In Europe the Kinks did a few festivals in France and Belgium. Curiously, Ray had invited along someone he had met in London, Chrissie Hynde.

Glamour - 1981

He wanted to keep it very low-profile. They were clearly closer than mere friends and they appeared happy together. I was a bit wary of her. It was really good to see Ray smiling and joking around and having a good time. He seemed to be coming out of his shell a bit. Although Ray appears on stage to be quite an eccentric performer and extrovert, in private he can often be relatively quiet and introverted, but always thinking. Sometimes it is as if there are invisible signs up around him saying, 'Private Property, Keep Out'. He can make you feel very uncomfortable. The closer you try to get, the bigger the signs become. 'Enter at your Own Peril, 'Strictly No Admittance'. Joking apart, I know what it is like. The world, or rather people, will eat away at your soul if you let them. Sometimes you're left standing there feeling totally empty yet people still expect something from you.
