I was surprised and filled with a heavy heart to hear the sad news of Pete's death. He was a great musician and contributed a great presence to the Kinks.
He had a great zest for life and a great sense of humor. I feel so badly for Dave, Ray, Mick and Pete's loved ones - my thoughts and prayers are with them too.
We were fortunate to experience his presence on earth.
God bless you, Pete ~ sending you love and thank you for the days...rest in peace.....

So sad to hear the news of Pete's passing. He was a great bloke and such fun. I remember he came round my house one Sunday to take me to tea at his Mum and Dad's house in Steeds Road! We drove in his Jeep. I must have been about 17 at the time. Let's smile as we remember him and do something quite crazy today in his memory. Bless you Pete. All my love Olg xx

I'm so sorry for the loss of yet another friend of yours, Dave... this has been a bad month. You are right Dave, The Kinks are not really the Kinks without Pete Q. At least not to me. The real kinks are Dave, Ray, Mick and Pete! Always will be to me.
I only got a brief glimpse of Pete's personality/character a few years ago, (2003-04??) when 2 women from this message board went up to Canada to visit him. They spent the whole day with him and his wife and came back and shared their experience with everyone here. I read their notes. I also heard about Pete from a few others who had met him too. Then he posted on this message board. I fell in love with Pete's sense of humor and his charm. He was a very funny man... and saw humor everywhere, it seemed, even in the midst of his "tragedies' His humor to me, was a sign of a very intelligent and quite evolved soul.
I feel sad that he has gone on, but happy at the same time, that he is now free of the limitations of his long time illness..
God bless him ...

A great message Dave.
There are a lot of people all of the world in mourning for Pete - expressed here, on the Facebook page that Olga set up, and also in KPS mailings. I've already sent out two of those today.

In #3422 I included list of some of the times Pete interacted with people on the mailing list. He was very kind to participate in some Q&A mailings where folk sent in some questions and he sent back answers. This is hitting everyone very hard.

Im so sorry for your loss Dave. I could always tell that you and Pete were close friends. I am sorry that youre going through such a rough time. When I heard that Pete had passed, I was stunned. I still am. One of my first thoughts, though, was concern for you, because I knew Pete was a close friend.
God bless Pete. He was a wonderful person, bassist, and artist. We are all so blessed for having him in our lives.

Thank you Neil. I'd love to read those old archives. I remember a few times when he posted...It was so nice to hear from him.
I am posting Sharon MacNeil's blog that she just wrote today....about her adventures visiting Pete and wife at Pete's home in Canada in 2002...a long time ago, it seems. http://bloviatrix.wordpress.com/. Click on link & scroll down to pics personally *captioned* by Mr Quaife himself.
Pete Quaife 1943 – 2010
I got word yesterday that Pete Quaife, the first bass player for the Kinks, has passed away. He was a great guy who seemed to me to really know how to enjoy life. I’d say RIP, but I don’t really believe in the after-life, so. I was lucky enough to meet Pete in the fall of 2002 in a crazy mission with a friend to make some sort of Kinks documentary whose theme was… I don’t actually remember… but Pete actually let us interview him on video and even crash in his home for a night.
My friend lived in Toronto, Canada near where Pete was living with his then wife Hanne and their 2 non-intimidating, friendly German Shepherds. She had purchased some sort of professional video camera, but we didn’t know enough to bring professional lighting with us, so the whole video was just not usable as it was fatally under-exposed. So what we gained was fond memories and a few stills.
Anyway, we drove up there into rural Belleville, Ontario and squealed with girlish (middle-aged) fan excitement as we pulled into the driveway of his modest house. We had prepared some questions and brought wine to loosen inhibitions (mostly ours).
What I do remember mostly was how cheeky and funny Pete was. And so very charming. I had brought some sort of Kinks illustrated book with me and Pete annotated many of the pics with clever and/or bawdy little drawings and captions, as he was an artist by training. He did regale us with some Kinks tales, most of which are too embarrassing/revealing to relate publicly, but I was so impressed with how much of a soul-mate he considered brother Dave Davies of the Kinks to be, and how exasperated yet awed by the talent of brother Ray Davies he was. I emailed to Dave Davies this list of funny tales, and Dave replied that Pete likes to be dramatic and to embellish the truth a bit. Pete was at that time doing dialysis treatment 4x a week, kidney failure brought on by chronic, (perhaps untreated?) high blood pressure. He played his acoustic guitar for us, and showed my friend his famous bass riff from “Wicked Annabella”.
One scary anecdote I can relate:
“Brush With Death”
Ca 1964: Kinks attend party in home of small-time music promoter in northern Illinois. Host seems to be after young Dave all evening. Party mainly attended by young men. Noticing that party is totally lacking in female guests, Kinks decide to split. Group later finds out identity of solicitous host: JOHN WAYNE GACY.
I later fell out with Toronto friend due to some foolishness from me that I don’t want to think about, but I understand she has found happiness, and I’m glad. Actually, Hanne and Pete had an acrimonious parting of ways soon after our interview. But they seemed devoted at the time, and obviously very gracious to host 2 crazy but well-intentioned Kinks fans.
Here are some scans from my book.

I'm so sorry - and sad - to hear about Pete - what a shock! Even though the KinKs weren't together, they were all still "here". It feels awful that one of them is now gone. Sending condolences and sympathy to his family and friends, and especially to Dave with whom Pete was so close. God Bless.

This past Monday, June 21, I was watching a Kink's live performance on Youtube ( at the 1964 NME awards?) where they came in second place for best new band. I noticed Pete was playing a truly enormous bass. I don't know enough about them to say they were all like that in the early 60s' but Pete stretched out his arm and made it look easy. I was even thinking of commenting on the importance of bass lines in the early Kink's hits, like Waterloo Sunset, Wicked Annabella, and my favourite -- Last of the Steam Powered Trains. He seems to be the kind of man who wouldn't let anything hold him back, and smiled through it all. I wish we all had the guts to live like he did.
Cheers Mr.Quaife, we didn't know each other, but you brought me much happiness through your music.

Namaste Pete - Om Shanti.

I am deeply saddened and very upset to hear the tragic news of original KINK Pete Quaife. I have been a fan of your music since 'You Really Got Me', you all really did got to me with your outstanding musical talents.
I didn't know what Pete was doing since he left the KINKS, and found on the internet that he had lived in Canada and Denmark and pursued a career in his artistic skills. I watched the 1988 Canadian interview on youtube this morning, and thought to myself, what a lovely man.
Now Pete is no longer with us, but the music and the man will live on in our hearts.
My sincere condolensces are extended to his family, friends and of course to you Dave, Ray and Mick.
R.I.P. Pete Quaife your memory lives on......... x
